Music box with ground off keys

with the lights off... is a compliment piece to Your Horizons (1). It was inspired by and dedicated to a friend of the artist who passed away in 2015.  It is a small piece which explores absence, which, while strongly felt,  remains intangible. with the lights off... comes from Nirvana's famous "Smells like Tean Spirit" which, working with musician Corentin Borges, I converted to play on music box and ukulele. While the recorded piece was playing, the only object displayed was a child's music box with its keys ground off so that it could not produce any sound when played. It's music was preserved only as a visual memory of marks, an eerie reminder of its original purpose and function.
