Performance, Dance, Poetry

Paper-Mache bull head, leather, fur, salt.

Exhibited in ECA with Pablo Valcarce and Matthieu Tricaud

The Minotaur performance addresses themes of impotence and entrapment, combining multiple mythologies from the obvious connection the Theseus and the Minotaur to the fallen heroes of the punk revolution. As a shamanistic poem is read aloud, summoning the horned god to dance, accompanied by Bitch's Brew by Miles Davis. The artist seals the minotaur within a circle of salt. In response to music signals from the artist, the dancer navigates the interior of the circle, but he and the artist can never touch - the salt barrier holds impermeable. Then as the dance progesses the artist intercedes and erases the circle and poetry, minotaur and performers welcome the audience to dance to the music which changes to Tina Turner. In the process the artist questions the idea of a "sacred space," its necessary interior and exterior, extending the energy generated by the performance and the dance to the rest of the room.
