Dance, Calligraphy, Video

Paper, sumi (Japanese Ink), bamboo, human hair, video.

The Calligraphy of Dance is a collaborative work with Sufi dancer Adam Hussain. In this piece the artists explore the intersection of Japanese ink (sumi-e) painting and dance, the calligraphy serving as a visual record of a dance performance. Japanese calligraphy is not intended to be perfect or symmetrical - it is rather more like the artist's spirit condensed on paper, executed in one spontaneous, confident, unstopping movement. Expanding this movement into a dance was the central challenge of The Calligraphy of Dance.
